Situated at the heart of the Finstown masterplan development sits the academic library and associated rare bookstore. It is a place of research, reflection and analysis of horticultural texts. It is a refuge from the outside world. A place where knowledge and learning are at its very core.

Architectural visual

The library itself is surrounded by a curated botanical garden that supports the collection. Within this space sits the Finstown reading room. This is a project of this space and study. This is an insight into the inner workings of a reading room and the process undertaken to develop this space beyond forming part of a programme and give it the hierarchy it deserves.

The aim of this design is to reconsider the furniture arrangement and the use of natural light to identify specific areas for different types of study. By analysing precedent examples of reading rooms within libraries, undertaking an investigation into the action of study and documenting the process I will be able to propose a design solution that effectively tackles each design consideration.
