For my project I developed my understanding of architectural ethos and design process to establish my own set of principles and design process. I achieved this by studying the principles and design process of some of architectures greatest architects. To do this I studied the architectural philosophies and views of these practitioners and how these ideas were relayed in their design process which were realised in the creation of excellent architecture. I then applied the learnings from this study to my own design process.

I chose this topic for two reasons; One, I believed it was an area that I struggled with and wanted to improve on. Two, buildings by renowned architects are celebrated and well documented, the process which leads to the design of these buildings less so. This highlighted the difficulty in defining the process, one of the lesser understood skills of an architect. This may also help explain my personal difficulty grasping the first.

The semesters work was comprised of two distinct phases. The first phase concentrates on studying the design process of a carefully chosen group of architects. Informed by this research, I then applied the learning of this investigation by developing my own architectural ethos and design process. This required a degree of reflection and self-awareness of my thoughts and attitudes toward design process in order to be able to challenge these ideas and develop my own personal style and design process.
